Re-globalization and Its Implications for Miami

By Alice Ancona

Trade, like water, flows through the path of least resistance.  2023 marked a year of resistance, challenges, and transformations in global trade patterns.

Here’s a summary of the impacts on global trade:

  • Economic Disparities: There was a notable difference in economic growth across regions, with North America experiencing strong trade while East Asia and Africa saw weaker trade.
  • Interest Rates and Inflation: High interest rates and persistent inflation impacted global production and consumption.
  • U.S. Dollar Strength: The U.S. dollar remained strong, and the U.S. economy continued to outperform.
  • Geopolitical Tensions & Supply Chain Disruptions: These tensions and disruptions impact commodity prices, logistics, and realign trade partners.
  • Non-Tariff Barriers: Increases in policy restrictions, nationalism, subsidies, and climate commitments affected trade.
  • Global Trade Contraction: According to the UN, global trade contracted by $1 trillion in 2023.

So how does this impact the Miami Customs District?
